The Groundfish Enterprise Allocation Council — the association representing offshore groundfish fishing enterprises in Atlantic Canada — has proposed Ottawa set aside 500 tonnes of northern cod this year for the offshore fleet.
That's despite the fact the Government of Canada has pledged the first 115,000 tonnes of northern cod (once the stock rebounds to that level) for the exclusive jurisdiction of the inshore sector.
In its presentation to the feds, which is attached, the Council points out in red text, "The market does not need or care about 10,000 mt of NL cod.”
Last week, FISH-NL published this year's northern cod management plan proposal put forward by the Newfoundland and Labrador Groundfish Industry Development Council, which is comprised of the FFAW and 10 NL processing companies.
