FISH-NL announces new secretary-treasurer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, May 4th, 2018

The Federation of Independent Sea Harvesters of Newfoundland and Labrador (FISH-NL) is pleased to announce that Harvey Jarvis has come aboard as secretary-treasurer.

Harvey, a native of Fair Haven, Placentia Bay, began his working life aboard his father’s fishing boat as an inshore harvester, serving as the first chairman of the Placentia Bay Fishermen’s Action Committee, and eventually moving on to the FFAW where he worked for more than 20 years as project manager.

“The FFAW-Unifor isn’t the same union that it was back in the day,” says Jarvis. “The FFAW has become a organization that operates like it owns the inshore fishery instead of being its representative and defender. Inshore fish harvesters need to be masters of their own destiny, and to achieve that they need an organization that represents only them.”

“Harvey knows the fishery as well as the union movement,” says Ryan Cleary, President of FISH-NL. “His knowledge and skill set will serve inshore harvesters very well.”

Harvey takes over the role of secretary-treasurer from Johanna Ryan-Guy, who stepped down in December for personal reasons. FISH-NL commends Johanna for her commitment and drive in getting the organization up and running for the benefit of the province’s inshore harvesters.
